If AI builds your product, you don’t really know your product

If AI builds your product, you don’t really know your product

It’s a strange time to be building products.

You open an AI tool.
You describe an idea.
Screens appear.
Flows connect.
Something that looks real exists within minutes.

It feels like progress.
It feels like speed.
It feels like you’re finally moving.

But something important is missing.

Speed Can Hide a Lack of Understanding

When AI builds the first version for you, it removes the friction that usually forces clarity.

You don’t have to decide the structure.
You don’t have to argue with constraints.
You don’t have to wrestle with trade-offs.

You accept what shows up because it works well enough.

That’s not ownership.
That’s delegation.

You Ship Faster

But You Understand Less

The gap shows up later.

When a user is confused.
When a flow breaks.
When a feature needs to change.

You don’t know where to start.

Not because the product is complex.
But because you never built a mental model of it.

You didn’t make the decisions.
You inherited them.

AI Didn’t Replace Thinking

It Made It Optional

This is where people get defensive.

They say AI is just a tool.
They say speed matters.
They say iteration comes later.

All of that can be true.

But tools don’t remove responsibility.
They just move it somewhere quieter.

Good products come from tension.
From choosing one thing and rejecting another.
From knowing why something exists the way it does.

When AI removes that tension too early, understanding never form.

Products Built Without Friction Look Finished

Until They’re Questioned

This is why so many AI-built products feel fragile.

Why does this flow exist?
Why is this here?
What problem does this actually solve?

If the answer is “because the model suggested it,”
the foundation is already weak.

AI works best when it accelerates decisions you already understand.

It works worst when it replaces the moment where understanding should happen.

Final Thought

If AI builds your product for you, you might ship faster.

But you’ll know less about the thing you just shipped.

And that gap always shows up eventually.

Hey, I’m Vishal, a product designer, vibe coder, and someone who’s been deep in the trenches with tools like Webflow and Framer for years. I run OhhMyAds, a small studio where we help brands go from messy ideas to clean, high-performing websites that actually do the job.

Most of what I write here comes straight from real client work, late-night rebuilds, and way too many “quick fixes” that turned into full-blown redesigns. If you’re into design that looks good but also makes sense, stick around.
