Why the Job Market Has Stopped Caring About You

Why the Job Market Has Stopped Caring About You

It’s not just older workers.
It’s not just Gen Z.
It’s not even just tech.

The job market didn’t slow down.
It hardened.

And most people are discovering that they are suddenly on the wrong side of it.

This Isn’t a Generational Problem

Everyone is blaming someone.

Older workers are told they are too expensive.
Younger workers are told they lack experience.
Mid-level workers are told they should “just adapt.”

None of that explains what’s actually happening.

Companies are no longer hiring for potential.
They are hiring for immediate usefulness.

If you cannot contribute almost instantly, you are filtered out.
Quietly. Automatically. Without feedback.

Entry-Level Is No Longer an Entry Point

The bottom of the ladder is gone.

Roles that used to train people now expect experience.
Jobs labelled “junior” require years of context.
Internships want proof you’ve already done the work.

This isn’t ambition.
It’s risk avoidance.

Why train someone for months when tools can cover the basics in minutes?

So new grads send applications into a void.
Not because they are bad.
Because nobody is willing to invest anymore.

Experience Isn’t a Shield Either

Experience used to mean leverage.

Now it raises questions.

Will you cost too much?
Will you push back?
Will you expect stability?

Companies don’t say this out loud.
They just don’t reply.

The system prefers people who are capable but compliant.
Skilled but flexible.
Experienced but not expensive.

That window is narrow.
And shrinking.

The Middle Is Being Squeezed

This is the quiet part no one talks about.

Managers are managing tools instead of people.
Teams are smaller.
Decision-makers want orchestrators, not specialists.

If your role can be assisted, automated, or abstracted, it’s under pressure.

Not because you failed.
But because efficiency is being rewarded over development.

This Is a Filtering Problem, Not a Talent Problem

Most people aren’t unemployed because they’re unqualified.

They’re unemployed because they’re unclear.

Resumes blur together.
Portfolios explain nothing.
Applications sound like everyone else.

The market doesn’t have patience anymore.
It doesn’t want to “figure you out.”

If your value isn’t obvious in seconds, you’re gone.

Final Thought

The job market didn’t turn hostile overnight.

It just stopped pretending to care.

Companies no longer invest in people.
They invest in output, speed, and optionality.

If you’re struggling right now, it’s not because you’re broken.
It’s because the rules changed quietly.

And most people are still playing the old game.

Hey, I’m Vishal, a product designer, vibe coder, and someone who’s been deep in the trenches with tools like Webflow and Framer for years. I run OhhMyAds, a small studio where we help brands go from messy ideas to clean, high-performing websites that actually do the job.

Most of what I write here comes straight from real client work, late-night rebuilds, and way too many “quick fixes” that turned into full-blown redesigns. If you’re into design that looks good but also makes sense, stick around.
